Uddihyana Bandha

Uddihyana Bandha is the Flying-up Lock and like moola bandha it is a internal muscle engagement that controls the flow of energy within the body.  To engage uddihyana bandha, you engage the muscles of the stomach on an exhale, pulling them in and up. Its as if the navel pulls into itself  and then lifts up under the ribs.  The stomach becomes concave and  the tail bone tucks slightly to allow the navel to pull closer and closer to the spine.  The spine should remain straight and the chest and shoulders should stay relaxed.  

 Sitting in a comfortable position and deeply exhaling, retaining the air out and engaging this lock is an amazing way to start your practice because it completely activates all of your core strength.  Immediately the muscles are awake and ready to support your spine throughout the practice.  Uddihyana can be engaged with moola bandha in a sitting position, and also throughout the the practice.
