Chakra-Balancing DVD Review

bhome_chakra_yoga_flat_225wOk, so before I did this dvd I had never really felt my chakras, and trust me I had tried.  While doing this dvd, super casually with my friend Nahdi, I could feel my lower four chakras buzzing!!  It was awesome!!  Needless to say, this is an awesome dvd.  Sharon Gannon, co-founder of the Jivamukti Yoga School with David Life, leads this beautifully made dvd with her characteristic dignity and grace.  She is truly a goddess type and watching and listening to her is enthralling.  She leads you through affirmations in a kind of guided meditation that associates one pose with each chakra and works from there.  The holding time of each pose is long but I think part of why this dvd is effective is because it forces you pass your comfort zone.  In a way, it breaks you down a little so that you can go deeper within (this is a concept I’ve been thinking about a lot recently… we have to break down the limitations we think we have inorder to become better, don’t you think?  Like breakdown who we think we are and what we think we are capable of in order to grow).  I was definitely challenged and opened up by doing the dvd and would recommend it to someone who wants to explore and learn about the chakras.  Her voice is calming and meditative and doing this video is extremely relaxing.  By the end of the hour, Nahdi and I had turned off the lights and were totally blissed-out.  You can purchase this dvd here, from the Jivamukti Online Boutique.  The below video is a clip from the dvd that gives you a little taste.  Enjoy!

By the way, chakras are energy centers within the body that ascend from the base of the spine up through the crown of the head.  There are 7 chakras, each associated with a color, and physical and emotional characteristics.

  • Muladhara Chakra: Root Chakra.  Associated with our most basic and instinctual survival skills.  Our desire to possess and feel grounded.  When balanced, we feel connected to the earth, grounded, and secure.
  • Swadhisthana Chakra: Sex Chakra.  Associated with our creative and sexual energy.  When balanced, we are creative, energized, and able to love.
  • Manipura Chakra: Solar Plexus Chakra.  This Chakra is our power center and associated with our ego and will-power.  When balanced, we can rely on our intuition and feel confident in our true nature.
  • Anahata Chakra: Heart Chakra.  Associated with compassion and love.  When balanced, we can follow our hearts fearlessly and feel open.  We can nurture others.
  • Vishuddha Chakra: Throat Chakra.  This Chakra holds our ability to communicate and express ourselves as well as our ability to discriminate between right and wrong.  When balanced, our speech is pure and we truly mean what we say.
  • Ajna Chakra: Third Eye Chakra.  This Chakra is our mind’s eye.  It allows us to see the truth and detach from that which we don’t need.  When balanced, we have transcended the material world and have the ability to concentrate and focus the mind.
  • Sahashrara Chakra: Crown Chakra.  This Chakra is about our spiritual connection.  It  is our conscious awareness.  When balanced we are at one with the universe, completely connected to our own spirituality.
